Lanna Thai Revisited

What do you do when you want delicious, healthy food, but don’t want to pay an arm and a leg to get it?

You go out for Thai food, of course!

Last weekend was a no-nonsense date for us. We needed a place we knew we could rely on to deliver. And, both of us were in the mood for Asian comfort food.

It was getting later into the afternoon on Sunday and I was a little worried we wouldn’t make our date after all. Especially since my daughter and I were playing “What Not to Wear” with my closet. A budding fashionista, she loves to help me pick out outfits. She also has no problem letting me know what looks good on me and what looks hideous.

“Get RID of those jeans, Mom! And that vest too. ”

Soon, there was a large pile on my bedroom floor waiting to be delivered to the thrift store. But what I had planned to be a fifteen minute project turned into a few hours. A huge pile of clothes still waited its fate on my bed and it was nearing 4pm.

And then, Hubby was yelling from downstairs.

“Honey! Are we going out or not?” He was watching the clock, worried we might not make our Sunday night date night deadline.

I pulled it all together last-minute and got ready in a hurry (with a daughter approved date night outfit, of course).

It almost became one of those “What do you want to do tonight?” date nights, but I flipped open the Passport book of participating restaurants and made a quick decision.

“Let’s do Lanna Thai in Everett”

“Ok. That sounds good,” Hubby was easy to convince, until he remembered an obstacle.

“But-we just did Everett last week, we can’t do the same city two weeks in a row.”

“At this late into the weekend, we won’t make it anywhere else and back in time,” I reminded him

“Good point,” He didn’t seem disappointed at the thought of eating his favorite Thai special dish.

Sometimes, rules are made for breaking-even when they’re our own rules. What matters is that we actually go out on a date, not so much where it is and whether it perfectly fits our criteria.

We arrived at Lanna Thai salivating at the smell of exotic chili peppers and sautéed Asian vegetables. As is typical in Thai restaurants, a hostess was waiting at the door with a menu and seated us immediately. Service was above and beyond here last time, and it was nice to be welcomed in the same friendly way again.

We ordered a pot of green tea and Hubby went for his usual, special noodles with Thai peanut sauce. I decided to get Pad Thai with tofu, instead of with chicken like I usually do.

The waitress brought our tea in a french press, which I thought was pretty cool. It was fun watching the loose leaves dancing  and floating into the hot water.

As we sipped and talked, Hubby commented on the decor.

“Did you see that lamp over there? This place has the most amazing stuff!”

Lanna Thai is definitely one of the more ornate Thai places we’ve been too. Eating there is like being in a hidden palace, tucked away along Highway 99. We’re pretty happy with ourselves for finding the place.

Special noodles and pad Thai arrived, hot and ready to be devoured.

As usual, Hubby gobbled up his plate and I had to stop about halfway through because I couldn’t eat any more. The portions are very generous here. The tofu went well with the pad Thai. It’s been years since I’ve eaten tofu, but I was happy with the way they cooked it-firm and flavorful, not soggy and gross.

While the waitress was boxing up my meal, Hubby pulled out a Barnes and Noble gift card he won at work.

“Hey, wanna go here after?” He asked.

“You know you never have to convince me to go to a bookstore.”

“Okay, let’s do it then,”

So, we paid ($20 on the nose with tip!) and left for Barnes and Noble in Lynnwood. On our way out the door, we realized every table was filled except a tiny one in the corner. I guess we aren’t the only ones who love this place.

Both of us enjoyed ourselves at Barnes and Noble. Hubby browsed books on non-alcohol beer brewing, and I checked out the newest cookbooks on the shelf.

We came home with enough time to wind down for the night and prep for the week ahead.

Like last weekend, a Sunday night date was a nice way to finish off the weekend.

Atmosphere (romantic appeal): 5. When you dine here, you’re not only treated like royalty, but it looks like a palace inside too.

Budget friendly: 5. The Passport card makes it even more affordable.

Food: 4. Yummy and filling! Next time Hubby said he will ask for the extra spices to add to his dish, like he got last time.

Fun and unique: 5. Even though it was the second time around, it was fun-both Lanna Thai, and the bookstore.

Memorable: 4. An all around good experience that lived up to our expectations.
