Totally Lame Date Night

Remember how I said we weren’t going out last week, due to my back injury? Well, as I also said, I was still determined to make date night work. So, we set the  kids up with a movie upstairs, and Hubby ordered takeout from Mayuri Indian Restaurant in Bothell. So far so good, right?

That’s when it all went downhill. First, Hubby put the takeout food in the oven to heat it up, as it had cooled on the ride home. Then, he went upstairs to say goodnight to our kiddos…..and forgot that the oven was still on. Our youngest child came racing downstairs and screamed “Something’s burning!” – and promptly turned off the oven. “Oh no! I forgot about the dinner!’ Hubby yelled from upstairs. He rushed downstairs to rescue it just in time. Dinner was just a tad overcooked, but thankfully, not burned.

Hubby graciously served up dinner, as I was in one position…lying flat on the couch. I ordered the Tadka Dal and Hubby ordered the Chicken Korma. As a side, we had Garlic Naan (Indian flatbread). Hubby put in a movie, and we started in to eat dinner. Now, we’ve been to Mayuri before; and we’ve gone crazy over their food every time, but this food was especially salty. Like, so salty you feel like you need to rinse your mouth out after each bite. Hubby said the same thing about his. And the N’aan was salty, too. My only guess is someone in the kitchen went crazy with the salt shaker.

So, that was disaster number two. And the disaster number three? I fell asleep ten minutes into the movie. Not the most fun and exciting thing to do on a date night, but hey I was on some pretty strong pain meds for my back.

Yep. That’s about how fast asleep I was.

All I remember is Hubby touching my shoulder and saying, “Hey, we should probably go to bed now.”

So, now you know why our last date night in was a flop. But, I have to say, it was a valiant attempt – and I am still proud of us for making it. And, at least the kids got a nice movie night out of it. When we went upstairs to go to bed, they were still wide awake. We felt like such old fogies.

Also on the bright side, Hubby kept it in budget at exactly $20 even.

Don’t give up on date nights-in. They can be lots of fun, memorable and romantic. In fact, most of ours have been that way. But alas, not this one.

Ratings:

  • Atmosphere (romantic appeal)- 3. The house was clean, but even we forgot to light candles! (Which, given that our food almost burned, is probably a good thing.)
  • Food- 3. The texture and spice were there, but the salt masked a lot of the flavor. This won’t stop us from eating at Mayuri again, though. Not every restaurant is perfect all the time. And, like I said before, we’ve always loved our experiences eating Mayuri’s food.
  • Budget Friendly- 4. We stayed within budget, thanks to our great friend, the Entertainment Book and Mayuri’s great prices.
  • Fun and Unique-2. you can figure that out!
  • Memorable… Sadly…. More like, forgettable.
