I promised you the nitty gritty on our 20 dollar date lunch last week, so here it is. Hubby had a busy day, and so did I. We knew we wouldn’t be able to fit in a date over the weekend, so Hubby called me at work and suggested we do a last minute date lunch. He picked BMG Thai in Mill Creek since it was close – and he had a LivingSocial voucher: $25 worth of food for $12! Pretty good deal, right?
BMG is situated in a little strip mall near Albertson’s and Rite Aid in Mill Creek. We had passed it a lot of times, and I was excited to give a new Thai restaurant a try.
The place was quiet, with only one other couple there eating lunch. Décor consisted of mauve – pink colored booths and tables and bright colors on the walls around them. Not the typical ornate surroundings we’ve been used to in Asian restaurants. There were no giant bamboo trees or jeweled dragons. Oh well.
“Have a seat,” the tall ponytailed hostess/waitress gestured to a booth nearby.
It took us awhile to figure out what to select on the menu. BMG has endless choices and varieties of food, including Japanese and Chinese food, as well as Thai. The waitress kept coming to check on us, and we kept saying:
“Could we have a couple more minutes to decide, please?”
She was gracious, and finally ended up suggesting a few items to us. Another rule we have is that we have to try something new on each date.
So, Hubby ordered the Drunken Noodles Kee Mao (doesn’t that just sound so exotic?) and I ordered the Spicy Yakisoba.
I was excited to see they had a three or four varieties of tea to choose from; and Hubby was happy to see espresso was listed on the menu. Perfect to give him that extra jolt before going back to work.
“We don’t have espresso” The waitress said kindly.
“Oh, really?” Hubby asked confused. “It says espresso here on the menu though…”
She was helpful, and went to double-check – then came back apologizing that they didn’t have espresso anymore. So, instead, Hubby snagged a few cups of my tea. He doesn’t like to admit he drinks tea though, so that’s our secret.
Our tea cups reminded me of those little cups you see in tea party sets for children. They were so tiny. But I like drinking from tiny cups. Somehow, it’s just more fun.
Our food came shortly after the tea. It was full of tasty vegetables and noodles…and it was spicy, but just enough. Hubby said his was delicious; and he tried to tell me his was spicier than mine. I tried a bite. It wasn’t, but he argued it was. (He always orders a level four in Asian and Indian restaurants).
As the rain and wind were raging outside, and we were talking about the progress of our day so far, I bit down and felt something hard grind against one my right molars.
“What was that?” I said. It felt like a tiny rock, and I had no idea how it got into my food. I did my best to find it as Hubby stared at me, hoping we didn’t just bust our $20 budget on dental work. Then, I did the most romantic thing you can imagine: I spit out my bite of food into a napkin oh-so-covertly, and excused myself to swish my mouth out in the restroom. No sign of the villainous rock after that. It felt like I might have chipped my tooth, but I wasn’t sure.
So, after that, we did our best to continue the conversation and enjoy the rest of the lunch date. Hubby had to rush off to work, and I had to rush off to pick up our kiddos at school. We paid the bill. With tip, it came to$ 14.75 (including the cost of the LivingSocial voucher). We managed to be under budget by just over $5! Crazy, I know! Believe it or not, though – this wasn’t the first time it’s happened.
I probably should have mentioned the rock to the waitress, but I was preoccupied with the time. This could have happened to anybody. Rocks and sand sometimes get into food, despite the best attempts to wash and rinse and prep food for the public.
Either way, I was cleared by my dentist a few days later during my regular check-up.
“You have a very minor chip in one of your molars; but it’s so small, I wouldn’t even worry about it.” He said. Phew.
Like I said in the preview for our date lunch, it was imperfect. I’m still glad we did it, though. Much better than no date at all!
- Atmosphere (romantic appeal): 3 Adding more plants, maybe a water fountain, and some updated wall décor…as well as paint would make a big difference here, and would complement the flavor and appeal of the food.
- Budget Friendly: 5 Our Living Social voucher was an amazing deal; plus-it was lunch, which means cheaper prices. Bonus!
- Food: 4 Tasty and flavorful, though a bit salty.
- Fun and Unique: 3 It was okay. Nothing thrilling or knock-you-over awe inspiring. Hubby and I enjoyed nice conversation, though.
- Memorable: 3 Ditto above. Date lunches are great, but I have to admit-there’s something special about dressing up and going out at night as a couple…plus, we always have more time then, so we’re less rushed.
