We are taking advantage of this sunny Seattle area weather lately. You never know how long it will last around these parts. So, last Thursday afternoon, Hubby and I decided to check out a new spot for dessert and coffee. We’ve been getting coupons for this place for the past few months, and were curious to try it out.
Hubby compared the coupon we had to his Pirq i-Phone app and found an even better deal: 30% off the entire order. Since we had just had lunch at home, we were looking forward to polishing it off with a sweet treat and lingering over coffee.
World’s Tastiest Frozen Yogurt and The Abs Coffee Company is tucked behind La Palmera Mexican Restaurant in the Mill Creek Town Center.
“So, this is where it is!” I said as we walked from the parking lot to the shiny, clean-as-a-whistle coffee shop. I drive through Mill Creek Town Center often, but had not spotted this place’s location yet. It’s a little hidden, but the signs on the main drag through the town center help to direct traffic to their shop.
It was a sleepy afternoon, and people were walking outside and eating lunch in nearby town center restaurants. The Abs’ doors opened out to the rustic patio, complete with Grecian style stone tables and chairs. The strange thing is that no one was inside, except a smiling young barista-who welcomed us warmly.
“Have you been busy today?” I asked her.
“Usually we are at this time of day, but it’s pretty quiet now for some reason,” she said.
My eyes shot over to the frozen yogurt machines, quietly waiting in the back. The barista handed us miniature cups to try samples of flavors like thin mint cookie, dulce de leche and peanut butter.
Hubby and I bounced around from flavor to flavor, trying to nail down our decision.
“Ooooh, did you try strawberry yet?” Hubby asked. “It’s gooooood!”
I tried a taste and was intrigued. The strawberry was “no sugar added” but didn’t have that synthetic taste a lot of artificial sweeteners tend to give desserts. It was like a mouthful of fresh strawberries blended in with a creamy, cool concoction.
Just as I was sampling the chocolate (always my favorite choice with any dessert), a flood of couples came in. Soon, we were surrounded by folks filling up their cups with frozen yogurt selections and sprinkling on toppings like Oreo cookies, cheesecake, and toasted coconut. It never ceases to amaze me how much people love ice cream and frozen yogurt. Anyone selling this stuff is in the right business on a hot day….or any day really.
It was hard to pin my choices down, but I picked peanut butter, no-sugar added vanilla, and of course, chocolate-which filled up most of my bowl. I had to work later that night and didn’t want to get hit with a sugar crash, so it was nice that Abs had low sugar options. Hubby got strawberry, vanilla, key lime, AND cookies and cream (!). All I needed on top of mine was half a small brownie, slivered almonds, and chocolate sauce. I laughed as I watched Hubby deciding on his toppings. Being that he has a major sweet tooth, I thought he would pile on a 3 huge brownies, but instead he carefully placed the other half of the brownie I grabbed onto his ice cream. He had to go back to work too, so I’m sure he didn’t need to be dragging through the rest of the day either.
“Let’s sit outside!” Hubby said as stuck our paper bowls on the scale for the barista to weigh. I agreed. It was a gorgeous day.
Hubby ordered an Americano and I decided to try something different and ordered a cappucino. I haven’t had one in about six years.
We grabbed the Grecian table, and after Hubby snapped the picture of our amazing fro-yo, we savored each cool, creamy, flavor-bursting bite.
I wonder if this new wave of frozen yogurt shops are all lying to us. Is this stuff really low in fat or are they just having a ball messing with our minds? Because it really tastes way too rich and delicious to be somewhat healthy. For now, ignorance is bliss.
But on that note- with a name like Abs Coffee Company, it tweaked my mind a little. I had this weird picture in my head of ripped bodybuilders, decked out in six-pack abs chowing down on frozen yogurt. I wondered if they stuck things like mashed up spinach, protein powder, and flaxseed in the frozen yogurt. (It sure didn’t taste like it.)
“I think Abs stands for something. It’s gotta be an acronym,” Hubby enlightened me.
We were going to ask what it stood for, but forgot.
While we were a few bites into our desserts, the barista came out to our table looking a little bewildered.
“I am so sorry, but I don’t know how to make a cappuccino and my boss is on break right now. Would you like to wait a few minutes, or I could make you something else?”
Hubby to the rescue. He used to be a barista a loooong time ago. He explained to her step by step and in detail how to make it. She looked relieved and thanked him and ran back in to brew it up.
“I remember those days,” Hubby said to me. “Not knowing how to do something and worrying the customer is going to flip out.”
I must say, I thought that was very sweet of Hubby to help her like that.
A few minutes later, she brought out the cappucino and it was perfect. The combination of frothy foam with the strong kick of espresso was an A+, especially for a first try. I tried to go back in and thank her but she must have gone on break, as two other baristas were working in her place.
Hubby and I topped off our date with a relaxing stroll through the town center, still sipping our coffee drinks. Everyone was out for a drive or a walk, taking in the hot sun. It made us smile to see so many people out having a good time.
The icing on the cake? This date only cost us $13.22 with tip. Unbelievable!
Atmosphere (romantic appeal): 4. These guys are smart to have the place so clean and polished. It just makes you want to go in and check it out. The options for outdoor seating are perfect for couples, especially during nice weather.
Budget Friendly: 5. More smart points: they send coupons all the time, and they’re on Pirq. This means people like us, who are on a tight budget can go back again and again without it breaking the bank.
Food: 5. Very flavorful and I love the low sugar options. The coffee had some serious energy and was not weak or wimpy in any shape or form. That’s good, because I hate wimpy, watered down coffee.
Fun and unique: 4. A dessert date out after lunch at home. We don’t do that often, so it was a treat.
Memorable:4. Good dessert and coffee is always memorable. You might forget, but one drive back to the same area, and your taste buds will lure you.
